I’m a prairie kid who loves research. I just completed a Master’s in economics with a focus on public programs, labour and education. Long before that, I did my undergrad in physics & English with a math minor.

Besides my resume, you’ll find this page full of sewing projects, the odd published poem, and stories about Canadian science.

A note about the blog title: in math and physics, the prefix eigen means one's own. It comes from the german, but mostly I always liked thinking about a particle's eigenvalues, and thought I might apply the same thought to my excursions.

New Year Baby Bows!

New Year Baby Bows!

My very last project of 2018 was making five little baby bows, three of which are pictured here.

A friend of mine’s birthday is New Year’s Day, and she had a dinner on the 30th to celebrate. When her sister had a baby girl 9 months earlier, we’d talked about having me make little bow headbands for her but never nailed down fabric/size/etc, so it seemed like a couple baby bows might make a nice birthday present. We’d already settled on La Maison Victor’s Angel Outfit headband, from the kids issue (which I can’t find online??)

I batch-sewed these, to get three extras: one for my coming baby, and two for future gifts. A very good little scrap buster, this project, if you don’t mind turning tubes of fabric (which I just got my husband to do, since I was on a tight deadline, having started the bows the afternoon of dinner!). I used beautiful Indonesian ikat leftovers from my Christmas shirt to my youngest brother (to be blogged soon, but a much more involved project than these, so that will have to wait) for two, leftovers from baby bloomers for one, and scraps from my bridesmaid dress’s (same blogging thing… and also a holdup on tearing out the zipper… sigh) muslin for another. The last was made with edges of a heavier cotton-linen canvas used for dishtowels, which was a bit more of an experiment as these are really meant for softer fabrics. Worked out well, though.
