I’m a prairie kid who loves research. I just completed a Master’s in economics with a focus on public programs, labour and education. Long before that, I did my undergrad in physics & English with a math minor.

A note about the blog title: in math and physics, the prefix eigen means one's own. It comes from the german, but mostly I always liked thinking about a particle's eigenvalues, and thought I might apply the same thought to my excursions.

So for the popsicle t-shirt, I ordered 1.5 m of cotton lycra jersey. With what was leftover from it, I managed a pair of training undies and a hoodie for cuss! And that fabric is truly all gone - the largest scrap left now is about 3 cm by 15 cm. Success!

First up, made some trainers with small cuts. I used the Stitch Upon a Time kids Scrundlewear with the trainers option in a 3 - and while that matches toddler’s measurements, they are quite tight. Tough for a toddler to pull down and up. I found the wetzone overlapping with the back of the waistband kind of unnecessarily bulky, and I didn’t add enough actual absorbency to it… I think the next pair will be 4s, with a shortened wetzone in front and back.

They look trim and cute as heck tho.

Next up, puzzle piecing a little hoodie! I don’t actually have a toddler hoodie pattern, so I hacked together the Grow On Romper hood and Grow Fonder from Apple Tree. Her Bunny Hug pattern probably woulda been worth it, but no printer at home!

I had plenty of the blue cotton lycra for lining, but using up the last of the scraps meant that they also had to go in the cross front - I like the look in the end - and I pieced the center section of the hood. I also made a slightly shorter waistband piece, pieced from the popsicles on the outside and with blue making up the difference on the inside.

Altogether, I feel like it’s a too cute popsicle combo out of the coolest fabric ever! Yay!

If there is a next time: Size up, play around with reducing bulk while achieving decent absorbency

Fabric: Black and white popsicles from Kapynen and some blue organic cotton lycra scraps
If there is a next time: I didn’t keep the tshirt pattern we traced, as I’d rather find another one. Round back adjustment might be in order.
